Stunning starts to our Autumn Term Topics

In Year 4 we have had a go at creating a Stunning Start to help engage and kickstart our topics in History, Geography and Science.

Science- At the start of the lesson, the children were introduced to their new topic ‘Living Things and Their Habitats.’ They were set the challenge to go outside and hunt for 3 different living things. The children got their hands dirty digging for worms, hunting for woodlice and pointing out several birds in forest school. This led to the questions: How do we know if something is living or not? How can we group living things? Why can’t we find certain animals in the forest?

Geography- To introduce their new topic, the classroom was covered in pictures of different towns, cities and villages. The children worked in pairs to around the classroom and discuss what they could see and compare the similarities and differences. The children got bonus points if they could identify where the place was.

History- To kick start their new topic in History the children were Anglo-Saxons for the afternoon. The children went into forest school to make Anglo-Saxon style houses using natural resources. The children then sat in their newly made home and shared specially made bread whilst reading myths and legend stories about monsters, creatures and terrifying demons.
